Ever Wondered What Happens to Your Solar System When the Grid Goes Down?

So, imagine this: the public power grid takes a nap. 💤
What happens to your fancy PV system? Does it keep running? Can you at least drain the last few electrons from your battery if it’s charged? Or does everything just go dark like a bad sci-fi reboot?

In my case — and with our Fronius PV system — the moment the grid says “bye-bye,” the inverter goes full shutdown mode.
No juice from the roof, even if the sun is blazing. 🔆
No backup power from the battery.
Basically, everything goes offline. Dead. Like… 404: Energy Not Found.

Sounds bad, right? Yeah. But the good news: in our area, power outages are pretty rare — especially long ones.
Still, the 12-hour blackout in Spain back in April 2025 made me rethink things a bit. ⚡

So tomorrow, I’m getting an upgrade.

Enter the Fronius Backup Switch! 🧙‍♂️
Once installed, we’ll be a little more off-grid and a lot more nerd-happy.
If the power ever cuts out again, I’ll just need to sprint down to the basement and flip that magic switch.
From that moment — assuming sunshine or some juice left in the battery — the whole house will come back to life like it just respawned in a video game. ⚡🏠

Over the past 15 months, we’ve pulled in several thousand euros (!) from our solar setup and feed-in rewards. So tossing a few hundred coins into a backup upgrade — tax-deductible labor costs included — now that’s what I call a Level-Up Deal. 💸🔋

It’s not about saving a few watts during a regular power outage — it’s about being ready for multi-day grid failures, like the epic blackout that hit parts of the Münsterland back in 2005. ⚡🕹️
